Transformation of an Industrial Ceiling
Long sweeps of gauze interspersed with decorative panels add interest, variety, as well as ethereal and dramatic beauty to cover up the rawness and the unremitting rectangularity of an industrial ceiling. The gray metal structures were adorned with exhilarating expanses of illuminated fabrics, evoking images from God’s Word in the worshipper’s experience. The otherwise bland office space was transformed into a place of beauty and worship with merely fabric and light.
Fabrics: One hundred yards of ivory-colored cotton gauze, 60 inches wide; six white panels of cut-away design, each 12 feet long, 45 inches wide, purchased at IKEA.
Lighting: We used blue theatrical gel in metal frames on small theatrical lights, red bulbs in a few of the office track lights, and regular white bulbs in others, to illuminate selected swaths for Passion Week. For Pentecost we used orange gels, adding yellow bulbs among the red ones.
